How Georgia went from blue to red

Donald Trump continued the streak of Republicans winning the state of Georgia. The real estate mogul defeated Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election by a margin of 231,323 votes.

Georgia has not always been a safe red state, however. Bill Clinton won the state of Georgia in the 1992 race. Even in the latter part of the 1990s, vote shares for the Republicans and Democrats were close to each other.

This map shows how Georgia’s counties have voted for presidential candidates since 1992. The colors represent the range of percent vote shares for each party. You can hover (or tap) over each county for details, and click anywhere outside the map to close the popup.
